Investigators from the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission stopped dozens of college students from obtaining alcohol last weekend in a statewide crackdown on underage drinking.
On Sept. 4, commission investigators found more than 56 minors possessing alcohol, 33 people who bought or attempted to buy alcohol for minors, and six people with fake identification in Brighton, according to a statement released by investigator Ted Mahony. Statewide numbers were not available yesterday because the investigation - dubbed Operation Safe Campus - is ongoing.
The underage students were not arrested, but their parents and respective colleges were called, Mahony said. Most of those students will not face legal action, he said, because authorities believe schools and parents can better address the issue.

Hurricane Ike barreled across the warm, energizing waters of the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday on its way toward the Texas coast after crashing through Cuba's tobacco country and toppling aging Havana buildings.
Forecasters said the Category 1 storm was already strengthening over open waters after leaving Cuba and could grow into a massive Category 3 storm before slamming into Texas or northern Mexico on Saturday.
Ike has already killed at least 80 people in the Caribbean, and Texas put 7,500 National Guard members on standby and urged coastal residents to stock up on supplies.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is believed to be recovering from recent surgery, South Korea's spy agency said Wednesday, as the communist nation rejected reports questioning Kim's health as a "conspiracy plot."
Speculation has intensified that Kim may have taken ill after he missed a parade Tuesday commemorating the communist state's founding 60 years ago. That followed weeks of being absent from public view and rumors that foreign doctors were brought to the isolated nation to possibly treat him.
