The Boston Transportation Department has spent $630,000 for 63 new "pay and display" parking meters - larger, centralized boxes - to regulate short-term parking.

As I'm sure most of you are aware, today is Election Day. WRBB reminds everyone do their civic duty and vote.

The Boston Transportation Department has spent $630,000 for 63 new "pay and display" parking meters - larger, centralized boxes - to regulate short-term parking.

Drivers can either pay with quarters, dollar bills, MasterCard, or Visa credit cards, and then stick the receipt inside the vehicle's curbside window.

Workers recently installed 32 of the meters, which were ready for use yesterday along Newbury Street from Exeter Street to Massachusetts Avenue, and on Hereford, Gloucester, and Fairfield streets from Newbury to Boylston streets.

Employees will install another 27 meters over the next few weeks throughout the area.

A suburban Detroit woman has decided to scare up the vote among neighborhood children by just offering treats to John McCain supporters.

Shirley Nagel of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., handed out candy Friday only to those who shared her support for the Republican presidential candidate and his running mate Sarah Palin. Others were turned away empty-handed.

Nagel calls Democrat Barack Obama "scary." When asked about children who were turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: "Oh well. Everybody has a choice."

Muslim and Vatican officials are holding historic talks in Rome to establish a better inter-faith dialogue and defuse any future tensions.

Catholic-Muslim ties soured after Pope Benedict XVI's speech in 2006, in which he linked Muslims with past violence.

The speech provoked Muslim outrage and triggered violent protests.

It also prompted leading Muslim scholars to launch an appeal to the Pope for greater theological dialogue, called the Common Word.

The manifesto now has more than 250 signatories.
